Selected papers relating to affairs in Sonora : typescripts, 1797-1853.

Contains typescript copies of 5 sets of documents found in the Archivo del Estado, Hermosillo, concerning the encroachment of Americans into the Sonora area before 1828; beaver hunting rights along the Gila and Colorado rivers; defense of Guaymas against possible American invasion in 1847; and foreign expeditions in Sonora in 1853. Persons involved include Philip Nolan, Manuel Muñoz, Governor of Texas, Commandant General Pedro de Nava, Ignacio Pacheco, Antonio Campuzano, and Manuel María Gándara.

Born to Peter and Elizabeth (Cassidy) Nolan in Ireland, Philip Nolan (1771-1801) became a noted mustanger and possible filibuster in Spanish Texas. Before arriving in Texas, Nolan worked as a bookkeeper and shipping clerk for General James Wilkinson in Kentucky and New Orleans, where he learned of business opportunities in Texas. Nolan began mustanging in 1791, though suspicions grew among Spanish authorities about his true intentions due to his connections with Wilkinson and illegal trade. A ye...
